Bodies and Souls was released in September 1983 by The Manhattan Transfer on the Atlantic Records label. This album took the Manhattan Transfer in a different direction from their previous releases, offering a new, revised style of their music. There were several collaborations on this album, including Stevie Wonder, Rod Temperton, and Jeremy Lubbock. Also appearing as a guest artist on the album was Frankie Valli, who appears on the song American Pop. For Bodies and Souls, the Manhattan Transfer almost completely abandons its roots in favor of a slick, popR&B direction on one side of the LP version And Souls, released in September 1983, was the first Manhattan Tranfer album to have an impact on the Rhythm & Blues charts. In the fall of 1983, Spice of Life climbed to 32 on Billboards R&B chart, while hitting 40 on the Pop chart. The album took The Manhattan Transfer into somewhat of a different direction, or as Tim described it, it encompasses a revised style of our music. In an interview with the group shortly after the albums release, Cheryl felt that the making of Bodies and Souls was a growing experience for the group, which resulted in a stronger unit.
