The Ladybug Transistor is a Brooklyn-based indie pop group associated with The Elephant Six Collective. Started in 1995 by Gary Olson, Edward Powers and Javier Villegas, the band quickly released Marlborough Farms on Park N' Ride records, adding and subtracting a couple of members and going on an international tour. With Jeff Baron Guppyboy, The Essex Green and Jennifer Baron Saturnine added to the line-up, they released Beverley Atonale in 1997, this time on Merge Records. Powers left the band. Album 1997 13 Songs. Beverley Atonale The Ladybug Transistor. Beverley Atonale, Ladybug Transistor delivers a gorgeous suite of gentle, quiet pop music, infused with melody and hooks but never overtaking the listener. The lyrics are esoteric and often incomprehensible, but you gather quickly that words aren't really the point - the band aims to set a tone more with its sound than with witty wordplay. The album is heavily influenced by the past, by such artists as the Beach Boys and Burt Bacharach - Windy swipes its opening drum riff from Phil Spector and slides effortlessly into a trumpet-driven light pop tune with some great guitar. This is a lovely debut from The Ladybug Transistor. The band hadn't found their sound yet but that's part of the charm here. "Rushes of Pure Spring" is the obvious single but the entire album works as a whole, even the atmospheric tracks like "Music for Tennis Courts" and the Kraftwerk influenced "Forest Marching Song". Even though the band would mature their sound, this album still stands out as one of my favorites from them. Unfortunately, the mix on the vinyl is less lively and engaging then the CD. I'm a vinyl guy so it's nice to have this in that format but I'll probably reach for the CD when I want to return to where it all came from for this Brooklyn band.
