Info

Reilly underscores the album's conceptual unity by using Wilson's voice to frame it, opening with a 1980 sound byte of Wilson playfully quizzing Martin Hannett about his production work and concluding with a politically charged excerpt from one of his last television appearances. Or Are You Just a Technician. 0: to Wilson is the 26th Durutti Column studio album, and the first to be recorded since its subjects passing. Its also the best thing Reilly has delivered for 20 years. His music has always had an elegiac quality, expressed through virtuosic fretboard cadences, delayed and filtered into fractals of emotion. Its a crystalline, empyrean, yet inexorably human sound that proves a perfect, poignant medium with which to salute a dead friend. There are voices aplenty here, too, including Wilsons own dulcet tones on the opening Or Are You Just a Technician. It's been 30 years almost to the day since Factory Records released The Return Of The Durutti Column in actual fact the first Durutti Column album following the inclusion of two tracks by an early line up alongside Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire and John Dowie on the label's famous 1978 sampler. With A Paean to Wilson, Reilly returns the endless favours Wilson did for him, simultaneously sharing his grief and providing Wilson with the kind of eulogy he would have loved more than any: a vocal-free Durutti Column record that justifies every word he uttered about the man he called his guitarist. The band is a project of guitarist and occasional pianist Vini Reilly who is often accompanied by Bruce Mitchell on drums and Keir Stewart on bass, keyboards and harmonica. They were among the first acts signed to Factory Records by label founder Tony Wilson. In 1978 Tony Wilson and Alan Erasmus, later partners in Factory Records, assembled a band around the remnants of local punk rock band Fast Breeder, drummer. 2016 г.
