Are an American-Welsh indie rock band formed in New York City in 2011 by Matthew Hitt, Jack Ridley III, Erik Lee Snyder and Daniel Jacobs. Their first release was the EP Between Us Girls which appeared in early 2013. In January 2014 their debut album Drowners was released worldwide preceded by the single Luv, Hold Me Down. The three non-album studio tracks on the EP are fine examples of the AndersonButler songwriting collaboration, which produced great material early in the band's career but diminished as the relationship between the two disintegrated Butler left the band in 1994. My Insatiable One and To the Birds are regal pop tunes in the vein of the title track, Butler's guitar propelling Anderson's soaring vocals. The Big Time is slower and sorrowful a lonely jazz trumpet sheds tears in the bridge. The first single off Drowners' eponymous debut, ''Luv, Hold Me Down,'' is a propulsive slice of perfect garage pop. It brings across this sort of jovial misery,'' says Hitt, ''It's kind of pop, like a lot of the rest of the record, but lyrically, it's not as shiny as seems. Drowners debut album is filled with energetic jangly guitars reminiscent of Johnny Marr of the Smiths coupled with the EAD chord simplicity of pop-punk bands like the Ramones. Songs are irresistibly catchy and justifiably short. However, their lyrics lack depth and are bound to appeal only to love-lorn teenage girls.
