In the a blocky 8-bit arsenal, the Depreciation Guild's more likely to attract attention from video game blogs than music publications. Considering the tacky rep the video game aesthetic carries in indie circles, this doesn't seem like such an unfair relegation for the Brooklyn duo. The back half of In Her Gentle Jaws jettisons any emo tendencies, instead opting to explore the recesses of this semi-digital realm they've created. Although not quite as enticing as the first half's rapid-fire hooks and ADD song structures, the latter tracks form a formidable wall of sound, albeit one built using a lot of coin blocks. Play album. In Her Gentle Jaws is the first LP by American dream popshoegaze and chiptune band The Depreciation Guild, originally self-released digitally on December 5, 2007. Vocalistguitaristprogrammer Kurt Feldman and guitarist Akira Hashizume recorded the album over the course of a week in January 2007 at the house of a close friend. Hashizume later left the band to go back to graduate school in May 2007 and was replaced by one of Feldman's college friends, guitarist Christoph Hochheim, who helped Feldman produce and finalize the album. Just picked this up, and I'm glad I did. While it's not a very quiet record, for chiptune-centric music the pressing is pretty good. The crunches of the instrumentation come through beautifully without clipping or popping, and Kurt Feldman's voice comes through quite warmly without being as overpowered as the digital release. In between tracks, during quiet moments, and on the final tracks of either side, some pops and hisses do sneak in but this is a non-issue at all other times.The packaging is top notch with a matte finish for the outer sleeve and glossy printing for the colour bars on the front. The inner sleeve is delightful to look at with its simple horizontal lines on the front, and slightly offset lines on the back to create an effect wherein (presumably) Kurt and Cristoph have their silhouettes embossed into the paper. It's hard to describe, but the physical album just feels like The Depreciation Guild in its presentation.One small thing of note is the presence of black spots in the record itself. These are few and far between, but since the release is transparent, they show up on either side. This does not affect playback, but it diminishes the aesthetic of the record somewhat. Admittedly this issue may only affect me. I still prefer Spirit Youth, but In Her Gentle Jaws remains fantastic and is definitely worth picking up on vinyl. Thankfully with a reissue on the horizon others won't have to be patient like I was.
