GEL
Outstanding Synth-driven NDW pop.

We start off with the title track Herz Aus Stahl (Heart Of Steel), and it provides the perfect introduction.

Zippy rhythm, sparkling synths, sharp guitars, New Wave female vocals (in German of course).

Schizophren kicks in with a more aggressive vibe, but soon explodes into euphoria. Very much in the style of Nena, but with more balls. Still plenty of Synth here, but brought in-line with the guitars. Similar to early Berlin.

Welt Am Draht takes things in a totally different direction. We get a sound not unlike early 80's UK Library Synth (think along the lines of Astral Sounds or early 80's BBC Radiophonic Workshop). Very melodic, very of it's time, and absolutely charming.

Next up is the superb Vollmond (Full Moon), which should have been a single in my opinion.

Shimmering synths, classy vocals and a very catchy chorus. It would have been perfect for Eurovision '82 (but more on that later).

Mia is a track that no matter how many times I listen to it, I just can't enjoy it. It plods along, and you're expecting something to happen, but in the end you sound like you're at a funeral (with big drum kits). I don't know the lyrics, maybe they're very sad, but the song itself just drags regardless of what you understand.

Meh.

So why did I give this LP 5 stars? Well, the rest of the LP makes up for the likes of Mia.

Just skip past it and you get Schlaganfall.

...actually, you get nothing. No, seriously, I have this LP and there is nothing between Mia & I Schlag Z'ruck.

Thankfully I Schlag Z'ruck brings us back up to that promised 5-star rating. A bit of a rocker, with another irresistible chorus and surprisingly no synths at all! I haven't heard much of The Days before this LP, but I imagine this track is more inline with their earlier LPs.

I like that there's crowd noise at the end of this song, quite a naughty wink from the guitar & drum players in the band I think!

Oh, and then G'schnappt Und G'fanga kicks in with another rockin' guitar riff!

For about 10 seconds.

BOOM! Back to synths just like that. G'schnappt Und G'fanga is totally catchy New Wave with a really cool chorus along with awesome early 80's synths.

Welt Am Draht (Schluß) is basically A3 played for 20-odd seconds to fade. Why? Fuck knows.

So we flip the record over to the B-side.

Jetzt Ist Die Ewigkeit is the song that made me aware of The Days. It was featured on one of those old "Tribute To Flexi Pop" bootlegs if I remember correctly, and thankfully it stayed in my mind enough to make me investigate this band more (well, actually up to the point right now of actually being bothered to write about one of their albums here on Discogs).

Jetzt Ist Die Ewigkeit (Now Is Eternity) is beautiful. You realise that from the first 5 seconds. Then the little arpeggiated bass synth kicks in. The enrapturing vocals. It’s just incredible.

Earlier I mentioned Eurovision. The next track, believe it or not, was actually shortlisted for inclusion in Eurovision ’82. Sadly it did not get past the qualification process. The name of this song is Kalte Insel (Cold Island).

Kalte Insel is a bouncy, catchy pop song with an almost Abba (think Take A Chance On Me) feel. Interestingly, there is an English version of this song on the 7” single, (the only single released from this LP) presumably to drum up support for the Eurovision opportunity.

Speaking of English, the next track is She’s Good. My word what a song! Unbelievable bassline (bouncy as hell, think Vince Clarke), cheeky lyrics, catchy (once again). Irresistible!

Stahlwüste does actually exist, unlike Schlaganfall. It’s just like 10 seconds of Moog noodling.

Deine Augen slowly fades in, very moody. You get a Darkwave vibe, very melancholy. The vocals start, and you’re thinking along the lines of Kirlian Camera. Then, all of a sudden, it turns into angry Celine Dion. Complete with Phil Collins drums & cheesy (but trying to be so seriously cool) guitar licks. This, along with Mia, are the two things I do not enjoy at all about this LP.

Thankfully I Schlag Z'ruck, er sorry, I Hau Ab brings us back up to that promised 5-star rating. Back to pure Synth-Pop, with a dramatic intro & driving energy. Very enjoyable vocals on this tune, along with wonderful synths. I think I’ve said “catchy” quite a lot in this review, but I’ll say it again.

Chains Of Love rounds the LP up, and it’s a bit like a nice & easy comedown tune.

“Ah, the party’s over. Nice to have met you, such a great evening wasn’t it!”

It’s a lovely little ending to what was a superb album.

There are faults (well, those two songs to be honest), but I wholeheartedly recommend this LP to fans of the more synth pop side of early 80’s NDW (along with fans of synthy New Wave in general).

Five Stars!
