Conceived at Steve Marriott's 16th century rural cottage Arkesden in Moreton, Essex, England, Town and Country offered a different, more sensitive pastoral approach from the more straightforward heavy progressive sound prevalent on their debut album, which had been released a mere two months. Immediate Records rushed the album into UK record shops in the Fall of 1969, hoping the record would enter the charts before the company went bankrupt. However, with no promotional budget to promote it, the album quickly sank without a trace. The LP wasn't released in the US, at that time, although the band was on its first American tour when the album was released, but it got a lot of attention on underground FM stations. All four members of the band contributed songs. Compositionally, Town and Country have shifted as well. Their songs were often noted for their length as much as their beauty, but for C'mon the quartet has constructed 7 songs in 40 minutes time. The various members have been involved in many other projects recently. The album also begins to reveal some heretofore unmentioned influences as well: the work of Arthur Russell, Jimmy Giuffre, and Eno's recordings in the 1970's for the Obscure label mesh with Town and Country's already original and minimally lush sound.
