Offering both vocal and instrumental tracks, the group could lay down loping, jazzy instrumental grooves heavy on the sax and organ. In a heartbeat, they could switch Counts modestly describe themselves as just another Jazz group, but what is contained within this album, is a selection of grooves which reflect how funk eventually manifested itself as a mainstream several years latter to this release. Several groups had their own take on funk on the Westbound label around the same time mainly P-Funk and their psychedelic rock sounds, but none were as accurate to funk as The Counts. The saddest part, however, is that The Counts were the ones that drew the short straw, and ended up being sidelined by Westbound. The group recorded and released What's Up Front That - Counts in 1971 and the album is rarer than rarer and funkier than funky. Not content with that state of affairs, we have added two previously unissued bonus tracks - Motor City and What's It All About- to the CD version the vinyl remains a copy of the original album. This one's a big club favourite and a samplers' paradise.
