Summary: The concept album about a group of Irish US soldiers who deserted to join the Mexican army during the Mexican-American War was an idea by The Chieftains' Paddy Moloney and co-producer Ry Cooder. Record Label: Hear. Genres: Folk, World. The Chieftains lay a vibrant carpet of colour but veering between joyous and heartbreaking, the fiery Mexican element is what makes it so compelling. San Patricio, though, is their most accomplished cross-cultural project to date. Read full review. Play jigsaw puzzles for free Home. San Patricio feat. Ry Cooder, 2010. San Campio feat. This is how those Irish champs the Chieftains see their music folding into the tropes of Mexico, rough-riding on the story of the Irish San Patricio Battalion, who fought in the USMex war of 1846. Chief collaborator is Ry Cooder, but others who appear include Linda Ronstadt, Liam Neeson and Los Tigres Del Norte. No crossover opp has been missed. Whether you enjoy the blend of pipes, bodhrans and chitarras will depend on both the nature of your musicological curiosity and the nap of your sentimentalism. More about: Blues Gospel Music Irish Politics Liam Neeson . If you only buy one Irish-Mexican album this year, in fact, The Chieftains and Ry Cooder should do you nicely. The Californian guitarist and the Irish folk heavyweights are seasoned collaborators as well as inveterate globetrotters. It was while they were recording together in Havana in the 1990s that the Irishmen introduced Cooder to the musicians who would star in his nostalgic world music bestseller, the Buena Vista Social Club. This time, though, the focus is on another historical gem: the little-known story of the Irish conscripts who deserted from the American army to fight with Santa An
