The Chameleons were an English post-punk band formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester in 1981. The band consisted of singer and bassist Mark Burgess, guitarists Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding, and drummer John Lever. They were called the Chameleons UK in North America because an American band had claim to the Chameleons name. The band released their debut album, Script of the Bridge, in 1983. They followed it with What Does Anything Mean Basically and Strange Times in 1985 and 1986, respectively. The Chameleons known as The Chameleons UK in the U. are an English post-punk band, formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester in 1981. The band originally consisted of singer and bassist Mark Burgess, guitarist Reg Smithies, guitarist Dave Fielding and drummer John Lever replacing original drummer Brian Schofield. The core quartet were sometimes augmented live by keyboardists Alistair Lewthwaite and Andy Clegg in the 1980s, and percussionist-vocalist Kwasi Asante during their reunion period. While signed to Geffen, the band released what was to be their last album together for fifteen years, Strange Times as the band literally fell apart, acrimoniously, with grief after the 1987 sudden death of band manager Tony Fletcher. The dawning of a new millenium saw an ending to the 'hostilities' as the band buried hatchets, kissed and made friends once more, culminating in a reforming of the group, and a new 'unplugged' album entitled 'Strip' - with live albums following beyond.
