Ramblin' Man is a song by American rock band The Allman Brothers Band, released in August 1973 as the lead single from the group's fourth studio album, Brothers and Sisters 1973. Written and sung by guitarist Dickey Betts, the song was inspired by a 1951 song of the same name by Hank Williams. It is considerably more inspired by country music than other Allman Brothers Band compositions, which made the group reluctant to record it. Ramblin' Man is a budget-priced collection that features some fine music but is essentially a rip-off. There's not enough music to make it a thorough collection and the packaging is shoddy. The band's other compilations and the original albums may cost a bit more, but they are much more listenable. The country-based song, written by Dickey Betts, was a significant departure for the band, but not an unnatural direction after Duane Allmans death. According to Butch Trucks: While Duane was around, we were a blues-based band that added John Coltrane and Miles Davis to the mix. After Duane died, we started heading in a country direction because that was Dickeys background. We all thought Ramblin Man was too country to even record. We knew it was a good song but it didnt s. This was the first Allman Brothers Band single recorded without their leader, Duane Allman, who was killed in a 1971 motorcycle accident. Duane's work is on their 1972 album Eat a Peach, but for their next album, Brothers and Sisters, they had to fill the creative and sonic void left by his passing. Dickey Betts stepped up in a big way with Ramblin' Man, which became the group's biggest hit and proved they could survive the loss. Even if it has more than twice as many songs on it, as a sampler this is only a good second to 'Winning Combinations - The Allman Brothers Band & Lynyrd Skynyrd' (added bonus you get some nice leonard skinurd songs). If you only want some of their best songs, pick up both samplers and enjoy 'em as much as you can. If you've already found that you love their music, just leave these be and spend your money on their official albums and maybe a few bootlegs along the way, and you'll hear many of these songs performed even better than on the original studio albums. But if you've come far enough to read this review, I'm sure you'll love this music!
