As a tourist from Europe, I once drove for days through the most remote and desolate parts of states like Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas, all the while listening to a few CDs that I had specifically chosen for the trip. My selection included this fantastic album by Terry Callier and let me tell you: it was the most awesome record to listen to while driving through the aforementioned parts of the US. The sheer emptiness and the vast, wide open spaces of those states are the perfect background for Terry Callier's haunting singing. With nothing more than guitar and bass as the foundation for his lyrics, Terry Callier manages to create an atmosphere of loneliness and sadness, but still with an incredible sense of hope in it; I don't know how to properly describe it, but maybe you get the picture. On this trip that I made, especially the song "900 Miles" knocked me off my socks every time I had it on. Others have said it before, and it is true: Terry Callier's voice has a profoundness to it that grabs you by the throat. If you are into singer/songwriter material like, for instance, Nick Drake, then this Terry Callier classic is a must have. Magnificent album.

I totally hear what you're saying. In full agreement. I, too, stumbled upon this album and I hadn't really listened to it at first. Somehow, however, I just knew that it would be a record that I had to listen to in an, if you will, appropriate setting. It was then that I decided to take that modest pile of CDs with me and just throw 'em into the CD changer of the rental car - after all, I knew exactly where I was going. You should consider that trip. Drive through the remote parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, or even Oklahoma. Experience the vast emptiness of Monument Valley, it'll be the tailor made scenery to enjoy this particular Terry Callier gem. You can even play his albums What Color Is Love and Occasional Rain; it'll have the same effect. And you're right. Nick Drake, John Martyn (Solid Air, superb release) they do jump to mind ;)

I just stumbled across this album and I was greatly chuffed. I had heard of Terry Callier via the UK Rare Groove scene. But because at the time I wasn't tuned into that scene I didn't check out Terry Callier unil now... Wow! I like the way you link Nick Drake to this... I am also not particularly accustomed to Nick Drakes work as only ever heard Northern Star (was it called that?). But I hear that sound... Also John Martyn springs to mind on his Solid Air album... I'd love to drive that drive in the USA. Vast is that word.. Peace

Seminal craft. Let it be known ... Simplicity conceals unimagined complexity. Let's leave it at that.

Wondrously deep and haunting album...a voice that may put the trance on whales! ...bass, guitar, and THAT voice! very few albums can cope with this 'un...it surpasses the term of acid-folk by far for its shimmerin' simplicity, sombre-hummin' minor chords, subtle eastern tempos...hm...ever heard COLTRANE sing?? Terry wrote songs like "It's About Time", "Spin, Spin, Spin", which got covered by H.P. Lovecraft (The psychedelic-rock-group of course) later on! ,, and then "I'm A Drifter" (8'50") the ultimate loner-anthem with a glistering yearn for tattoo!
