Info

The Most Incredible Thing is the score for the 2011 ballet of the same name, based on the eponymous 1870 fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. It contains music written and performed by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys. The album was released on 14 March 2011 by Parlophone. Tennant and Lowe proposed Andersen's story about a competition in a mythical kingdom where the King announces that whoever invents the most incredible thing will win the hand of the. The seventh sleeve contains an oversized foldout sheet music print, signed by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. The ballets synopsis is printed onto the record sleeves so that each has an accompanying narrative that reads like a storybook. With a new mainstream PSB album in the works, and projects like this showing that the band's desire to reach beyond the confines of pop shows no signs of abating, it's evident that Tennant and Lowe remain powerful forces for the progression of contemporary composition. The Most Incredible Thing is the Pet Shop Boys' first foray into the world of ballet scoring, and its as slick and smart as expected. Composed for Londons Sadlers Wells Theater adaptation of a late-period Hans Christian Andersen story, this must be a welcome souvenir for audience members, but those not in attendance will find the two-disc set a bit much, and with so many story-driven twists and audio cues, its too demanding for background listening. A limited run of 550 in the UK came with an artcard of the cover that was signed by both Neil & Chris. I know that they were sold via the official website, but don't know if they were available elsewhere.

My copy was bought in the Newbury Comics chain in the US, and is the book packaging "made in the EU." It also had an artcard with both signatures, and on the back was written "US 27 / 250" which indicates a signed run was also done for the USA.
