It was written by Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley, and Chris Hughes and produced by Hughes. The song was first released on 18 March 1985 by Phonogram, Mercury, and Vertigo Records as the third single from the band's second album, Songs from the Big Chair 1985. Everybody Wants to Rule the World is a new wave song with lyrics that detail the desire humans have for control and power and centre on themes of corruption. It took so much out of them physically and emotionally, they didn't go back to work until a few years later, finally emerging in 1989 with their album The Seeds Of Love. Curt Smith explained in Outlook magazine: We soon realized that touring isn't much fun with a bunch of drum machines and sequencers. I know this because it was the month that Everybody Wants to Rule the World came out, and it was the same month that my oldest brother moved away 12 years my senior.
