Allegro con grazia Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, also known as the Pathétique Symphony, is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's final completed symphony, written between February and the end of August 1893. The composer entitled the work The Passionate Symphony, employing a Russian word, Патетическая Pateticheskaya, meaning passionate or emotional, which was then mis-translated into French as pathétique, meaning solemn or emotive. This recording of Tchaikovsky's Symphony 6, Pathetique by Eugene Ormandy 1899-1985 and the Philadelphia Orchestra is really disappointing compared with the 1960 recording by these forces on Sony Essential Classics. Ormandy's conducting is slow, but intensity is lacking, and the Philadelphia strings, still beautiful and powerful in 1981 when this was made, seem to be on auto-pilot when this was recorded: just going through the motions same old, same old. been there, done that.
