Total Explosion - Syl Johnson. Лента с персональными рекомендациями и музыкальными новинками, радио, подборки на любой вкус, удобное управление своей коллекцией. As this album's predecessors had Johnson vacillating between being a romantic and a wretch, Total Explosion explores his unrepentant side with good results. I Only Have Love for You is a classic Memphis shuffle and finds Johnson all but boasting about his lack of financial savvy, as he sings, All I got to give is me. With all of the ill will and venom spewed on Total Explosion, the innocent Star Bright, Star Lite just still doesn't ring true. Johnson comes back to his senses on Steppin' Out. Born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, he moved with his family to Chicago in 1950, where blues guitarist Magic Sam was his next-door neighbor. ★★★★☆☆ Besides Al Green, producer Willie Mitchells Hi label's most prominent male performers were Syl Johnson and O.V. Wright. Though not up to par with Al Green, both Johnson and Wright had their rightful claim to fame, but inconsistent albums were a major problem for both. Besides all the charectaristics of Willie Mitchells production Syl Johnson's Hi recordings represent a slightly rougher expresssion than that of Al Green, e.g. on "Watch What You Do To Me" and "'Bout To Make Me Leave Home". These really good tracks tracks have all the Hi label chemistry - but what in the end separates Johnson from Al Green's stardom is the in general weaker label writer's material (Picking 2nd after Green, I guess) and Johnson's inability to write his own material. Being second to Al Green isn't bad though, and his slightly slower version of "Take Me To The River" (114 BPM to Green's 118 BPM) may even be prefered by some as a more groovy and dancable version. If already in posession of Al Green's and Ann Peebles's best Hi releases and wishing for more of that sound, Syl Johnson is definately worth a visit.
