Can't Buy a Thrill is the debut studio album by the American rock band Steely Dan, released in November 1972 by ABC Records. The album was written mostly by band members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, recorded in August 1972 at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles, and produced by Gary Katz. I recently bought The Royal Scam along with two other dan favs Katy Lied and Pretzel Logic. I have to say that this album is fast becoming my favorite. Two Against Nature. It's not that I hate TAN it's just I feel it doesn't have that same kick Everything Must Go had. Pretzel Logic - I know this one is typically very popular, and I'm sorry to the people who gravitate towards this album in particular, but to me, PL just feels very disjointed at times. It's also got some of the same drawbacks for me as in Katy Lied, Fagen hits a couple of sour notes in Charlie Freak and Monkey in your Soul and that really irks me. Through With Buzz is a 95 second anomaly to me, and East St. Louis Toodle-Oo, while a great song, really sticks out like a sore thumb in this album. 9 on the fith album The Royal Scam by Steely Dan 1976. Cant Buy a Thrill the title, of course, was lifted from a line in Dylans It Takes a Lot to Laugh is distinguished by three top-level cuts and scattered moments of inspiration, but there are those instances of Steely coming on like a limp dildo.
