Piledriver is the fifth studio album by the English rock band Status Quo, released in 1972. It was the first to be produced by the group themselves, and their first on the Vertigo label. It was a top five hit, and included several live favourites that would be frequently featured in concert. The album was the first one the group recorded after they had switched labels from Pye to Vertigo Records. When recording for Pye, the studio staff had complained about the volume as it would overload the input. Status Quo - Piledriver 1972. Though Status Quo is best known for fast and undistinguished boogie rock, they were quite capable of subtlety when it suited them. Despite the name, most of the music on Piledriver is varied and subtle enough to be interesting. The power boogie is indeed there, as represented by crowd-pleasers like Don't Waste My Time and Paper Plane, but so also are quieter, softer pieces with acoustic textures and progressive structures. Status Quo took a while to get into their stride as an albums band, but once they did, there was no stopping them. Theyd joined the UK singles landscape with the 1968 top tenners Pictures Of Matchstick Men and Ice In The Sun, then after a quiet-ish spell, there were further hits in 1970 including Down The Dustpipe. But four albums came and went without making the British bestsellers, until finally, their Vertigo Records debut Piledriver cracked the code and entered the chart on 20 January 1973.
