More London Midland and Scottish Railway Stanier Class 5 4-6-0, commonly known as the Black Five, is a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives. It was introduced by William Stanier in 1934 and 842 were built between then and 1951. Several members of the class survived to the last day of steam on British Railways in 1968, and eighteen are preserved. The Black Fives were a mixed traffic locomotive, a do-anything go-anywhere type, designed by Stanier, who had previously been with the GWR. In his early LMS days. Stanier Black Five 4-6-0 stands on Carstairs 66E MPD on 13th Aug 1966. The shed was adjacent to the station on the northern side of the triangle junction at Carstairs. The Black 5 had only short of 20years service, before being withdrawn from Carstairs.
