Post-punk meets electro on exciting debut from Edinburgh's Snide Rhythms.

Anyone who knows me, or at least knows my musical stance, knows of my love of hearing anything that sounds different or original. Snide Rhythms tick both the boxes here, with what is an innovative and imaginative record.

It's been almost two years since the band released their debut single, the double A-side 'I Can't Keep Up' / 'People Pleaser' - both featured here. In that time they've gained a strong local following which, on the quality of this record, is surely going to expand.

The album itself has hints of many influences, some more obvious than others. 'Yah vs. Schemie' more than doffs its cap to The Fall (I'm sure Mark E. Smith would be proud to put his name to it!). At other times you can hear hints of LCD Soundsystem at their best. At others their are hints of punk's hey day.

Opener, 'Devil Cult Probe', is one of the real standouts here - gutsy rhythm guitars, electronic harmonies and awesome vocals. You could be forgiven for thinking this is what an art-rock pop song sounds like! That said, this isn't some arty album that's up its own arse. Quite the opposite. The tracks here are accessible to all and the album is all the better for it.

Early single 'I Can't Keep It', is a full of energy garage-rock number. Singer Colvin Cruickshank delivers a stomping vocal over a soundtrack that wouldn't be out of place on a John Spencer Blues Explosion record. The other side of that early single, 'People Pleaser', is a rhythm laced synth track which carries the message to reject your heroes.

'Distraction' is the most commercial sounding number on the album, but even at that it more than deserves its place here. In fact, it sounds like something that you wouldn't be surprised to hear on the 6Music playlist.

The album is definitely a grower - some of the tracks are not exactly instant, yet on repeat listens you find them jumping out at you. 'Enough of This Feeling.' is definitely in that category. I have to admit that it completely passed me by on the first listen but it's definitely a grower.

The album's closer 'See Through Skin' is the perfect closer - vocally and musically it's another of the record's standout moments. Throughout this record Cruickshank delivers a fine vocal display against what is clearly a talented musical backing.

If you want to hear something different yet at the same time familiar, this is the record for you.
