Smithfield Freeman played a large role in the production, arrangement, writing and performing of the music. He enlisted a large entourage of about 16 musicians to assist in the album. Operatic at times, jazz and horn flourishes at other times, progressive treatments and then just rock oriented tangents. It seems to be a concept album of sorts, dealing with a mans descent into a dark place mentally. Its all mixed into this potpourriPandoras box of an album. Freeman is the eponymous debut studio album by American rock band Freeman. Aaron Freeman left Ween in May 2012. He played shows both solo and accompanied by Joe Young from 2012-2014. On Aaron Freeman's self-titled solo album, the 44-year old singer and former Ween member finds himself on the other side of recovery, atoning for a life lived recklessly. Theres no easy emotional true north on Freeman, and for Ween newcomers, the record is bound to sound odd, even off-putting. A real favorite of mine. This is a big production job with horns and even strings--AND IT WORKS! A brillient concept album about a man's descent into madness. In many ways, this is the US equivolent of the legendary Dr Z album.
This was a priviate release out of the Baltimore area. Musically, it's heavy prog. Freeman wrote, produced, and arranged the whole thing, as well as played the keyboards--piano, organ, and synth. Anyone know anything about this guy?
Anyway, this is a doom masterpiece, and proof that you don't need fuzz guitars to creat dark music! (There is guitar, but it's just a part of the mix.)
