Info
MachinaThe Machines of God is the fifth studio album by the American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, released on February 29, 2000, by Virgin Records. A concept album, it marked the return of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and was intended to be the band's final official LP release prior to their first break up in 2000. A sequel album-Machina IIThe Friends & Enemies of Modern Music-was later released independently via the Internet, and limited quantities for the physical version. Machina: The Machines of God is the sound of the Smashing Pumpkins falling apart, but the Pumpkins had come close to falling apart in previous albums. So really, this album is the sound of the Smashing Pumpkins not just falling apart, but of the pieces to repair them falling out of piece. Iha and Corgan's usually vibrant partnership of super charged guitar work is gone, now lifeless and overproduced. Exclusive discount for Prime members. Sample this album Artist Sample. In my eyes its easily up there with the Pumpkins best work and among the best album of the last 15 or so years. Read more. 5 people found this helpful. Machina was marketed as a return to form, but that's not quite right. Glass and the Machines of God: An animated mini-series that was to act as a companion to the album. The songs are told from the perspective of a fictitious and somewhat psychotic rock star named Zero based on Corgan who changes his name to Glass after hearing the voice of God through the radio waves. There was supposed to be a whole rock suite where you symbolically go to see the Machines of God in concert, so songs like Everlasting Gaze were supposed to flow into Dross. I have the liner notes somewhere in my archives of what I meant to do. What do you get when a rock band takes fashion cues from Clive Barker You get Machina The machines of god.
