Sinistro is a Portuguese female fronted Doom Metal band. They deliver some heavy bass-filled tracks with a soaring companying vocal range. I bought the vinyl when it was first announced, since I was impressed by their previous output. I don’t think I’ve heard any other band sing so hauntingly beautiful, especially in the Doom Metal genre, and never in their native tongue. The tracks are slow paced, with breakkdowns here and there, with a eerie presence of bass all the time. The riffs are crushing, sometimes approaching stoner lenghts, which is not bad at all for a second release from this outfit.
The albums kicks off with a droning backdrop of an overdriven guitar in the bass range, backed by a slow, heavy set of drums, a crushing hi-hat and of course the invocative voice of (...). The first track is by far the longest, clocking in at over eleven minutes, but that doesn’t mean it holds anything back. There’s an eerie synth playing with oscillating tunes like an old hammond organ, which compliments the vocal lines in a beautiful way. When the guitar is played in company with piano and the slow vocal lines it creates a mystical atmosphere which drags me in, and fills me with tranquil sadness. Although I can not understand the lyrics, I embrace the feeling. “Lòtus” is a slow starter, which has a horror movie like opening, before the heavy riffs sets in. Like an anvil dropping on a drumkit, each stroke is devastating, as well as the haunting vocals. It feels like a slow journey into the dark abyss below, which is reflected in the lyrics. As we continue the listening, it gets darker by every step, a ghostly choir joins in on the vocal side. Perhaps luring us into its trap with its increasing intensity, although the melody remains the same throughout it. The way the vocals seems to have a mind of their own is very impressive pulled off. They follow the rhythm of the song, but only when they feel like it. Like a vocal artist who is performing ad lib while the rest of the musicians are doing what they should. It doesn’t feel out of place, it just enforces my impression of the talent at display here. As we reach the second half of the album, the experimental phase wears off a little, and the songs become more linear in style. “Gardênia” has a stoner-like riff opening which resonates through hi hats and bass guitar. That shaky, but confident voice of (vocalist) continues to pour out her heart to us as a contrast to these majestic overtures. The last installment on the album allows her to reach even higher plateau, and the drums are almost reaching the incredible density of the first track. The soaring voice rings from a low range in the chorus, and with ever lengthening tones it reaches its peak in a gut wrenching scream. A cacophony of guitar, drums and the repeated shorus line over and over again makes the entire album stay in your head for quite some time. The Portuguese Doomsters have done it again!
