Graveward is the tenth full-length studio album by the Japanese avant-garde black metal band Sigh, released in 2015. Sigh is regarded by many as Japan's leading extreme metal export, having released numerous highly esteemed recordings throughout their twenty year existence. Although originally a black metal band, Sigh became recognizably eclectic, taking influence from Romantic era classical music, jazz, prog rock, dark electronica and more. If you're anything like me, listening to a new Sigh record is an experience that can't really be topped or explained. The band has come out saying that this album was quite the endeavor to create. There are hundreds of audio tracks often within a single song and if you listen hard you will probably always find something new in a song. Also, I'm sure there is always the instinct and hope to make the new album bigger and weirder than the one before it, which seems tricky on album ten. A review of Graveward by Sigh available April 27th in Europe and May 5th in North America via Candlelight Records. Sigh are on their tenth trip around the turntable and still spin at 45, since there isnt a faster option. Graveward is their attempt to penetrate the monolithic shadow cast by In Somniphobia, an album so fantastically strange that it was a sidestep even by the standards of a band that defines the term avant-garde.
