Ma Theann Tuun A Aonaigh - Sidney Robertson Cowell. This 1957 field recording, Songs of Aran, documents some of the vocal traditions of the Aran Islands, located off of the west coast of Ireland. Sung for the most part in Irish Gaelic, these songs bring to life the barren and sparsely populated islands of Inishmore, Inisheer, and Inishmaan. Included are lullabies, songs to accompany spinning, and two Irish Caoines, traditional expressions of grief characterized by wailing or crying. Extensive and affectionate liner notes paint a portrait of the island' cultural history, the people, and the music. Sidney Robertson Cowell - Recorder, Producer Ronald Clyne - Designer. Gaelic psalm singing, or Gaelic psalmody, is a tradition of exclusive psalmody in the Scottish Gaelic language found in Presbyterian churches in the Western Isles of Scotland. It is a form of Gaelic music. The psalms are sung unaccompanied, in a style known as lining out or precenting the line, in which the leader of the performance, or precentor, sings a line, after which the rest of the congregation follows, with each member allowed to embellish the melody as they wish, in a free heterophonic. Sidney Robertson Cowell might be starting to get the attention her rich life, first-rate writing, and broad work as an ethnomusicologist deserve. Sidney Robertson Cowell knew all that. Outside of the U. she recorded elderly singers off the western coast of Ireland her work there produced more than 11 hours of recordings. She also documented musicians and singers in Thailand, Iran, Malaysia, and elsewhere, though very little has been written about her work in those places. The Irish National Anthem, The Soldiers Song, Amhran Na Bhfiann - Gaelic, The National Anthem of Ireland - The Irish Army Band. The Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland are a palimpsest bearing layers of representations in a myriad of forms including literature, film, television, radio, photography, and art, representations created by islanders and visitors. 192 While the American ethnographer Sidney Robertson Cowell 1903-95 was busy collecting the Songs of Aran during her 1955 visit to Árainn Cowell 1957, she omitted locally-composed songs in Irish including Amhrán an Chogaidh by Sr Benan alias Mary Sheáinín Aindí Ní Ghoill from Sruthán, Árainn because they were offered by a singer
