Ryans Fancy was a CelticIrishNewfoundland Folk group formed in Toronto, ON, Canada by 3 Irish immigrants and based in St. Johns, NL, Canada, active from 1971 to 1983. The group had an eponymous show in 1972, 1978 and 1981 as well as a collaborative show with Tommy Makem in 1974, 4 specials from 1979 to 1980 and starred in the movie Pirates Gold in 1980, all programs of which aired on CBC Television. Dance Around This One is the groups 9th studio album and final album to feature accordionistvocalist James Keane, who would depart the group shortly after the albums release. The band consisted of multi-instrumentalists Denis Ryan, Fergus O'Byrne, and Dermot O'Reilly, all of whom were Irish immigrants to Canada. Between the years of 1967-1969, O'Byrne, O'Reilly and Ryan emigrated to Toronto from Ireland in search of better jobs. Not initially intent on working professionally as musicians once in Canada, their musical skills and experience, combined with their Irish heritage, provided them opportunities in. Ryan's Fancy came to be when Sullivan's Gypsies parted ways. The trio relocated to St. John's, Newfoundland in 1971 to attend Memorial University of Newfoundland. Making a splash in the local music scene, the group landed the first of several television series.
