We instantly fell in love with these supercharged soul rockers. Royal Headache have earned this beer-slinging, shout-along adulation fair and square. The songs of 2012's Royal Headache were catchy, loud, fuzzy, and frantic, and Shogun's voice has absurd range, plenty of force, and soul. It took three years to follow up on this debut, and with High they waste no time charging back in. On opener My Own Fantasy, Shogun belts I used to live in a world of rock'n'roll and tons of girls over a chugging, high-power intro. At a glance, it seems he's going through rock-god motions-romanticizing guitar music while ext. Royal Headache are a live band drained of their spirit on record, and High suffers from that even more so given its meant to be experienced as a separated couple within the same room. For the albums slower songs, however, the production can help. Soulful keys strike up an outdoor prom feel on Wouldnt You Know , a slower number for those eager to flash the freshly wounded heart on their sleeve. After crashing the garage punk scene with a brilliant debut album that sounded like a lo-fi Undertones backing a barely audible-for-all-the-noise Otis Redding, Royal Headache return with a second album that does a little bit of cleaning up, but sacrifices none of their ragged, rough soul. On High, the sound takes a small leap into the mid-fi range, with the guitars sounding fuller and tighter, the rhythm section delivering a heavier punch, and some subtle keyboards added to the mix.
