In Dreams: The Greatest Hits is a two-record album set of Roy Orbison songs released in 1987 on Virgin Records. It was produced by Orbison and Mike Utley, except for the song In Dreams, produced by Orbison with T-Bone Burnett and film director David Lynch. All songs are new recordings by Orbison from 1986, except In Dreams from April 1987. The original 1960s versions of these songs were hit records for Orbison when recorded on Monument Records from 1960 to 1964, with two exceptions. The first. Including versions of his hits rerecorded in the mid-'80s, including a reworking of the title track for David Lynch's Blue Velvet, In Dreams: The Greatest Hits certainly does contain a generous 19 tracks of Orbison's best material, although the fact that none of these are original versions makes this one a tough one to recommend. Orbison's voice was grand to the end, and the arrangements are faithful, but none of these match the power of the originals. I wanted to like this album, but frankly I'm a bit disappointed with the re-recordings. I really like Roy Orbison, and I also am a big fan of T-Bone Burnett, so it pains me to say this, but the recording itself seems anachronistic. It just feels too 1980s, which is the wrong decade compared to the decade this music comes from. On the plus side, the songs are excellent, and the audio recording quality engineering is good.
