Tattoo is the fifth album released by Rory Gallagher. It demonstrated Gallagher's eclectic range of musical influences starting with the blues and adding elements from jazz, folk, and country. Tattoo showcased the skill of Gallagher and his band across a number of genres from Delta and Chicago blues, the jazz-influenced They Don't Make Them Like You Anymore and blues-rock tracks such as Tattoo'd Lady. Having released his third studio album Blueprint in February 1973, Rory was in a prolific and confident mood and so quickly returned to the studio that summer. Retaining the Blueprint line-up of Gerry McAvoy, Lou Martin and Rod deAth, rehearsals for the album began at a rowing club in Cork city. This allowed Rory to develop the musical arrangements of his material at a leisurely, relaxed pace. Gallagher's work ethic was in high gear as he somehow found time to write nine more songs in the midst of non-stop touring for his second album released in 1973. Even more astounding is that far from sounding fatigued or burnt out, his performance here is loose and impassioned, and the tunes are some of the best of his career.
