Doin' the Thang is the debut album by jazz pianist Ronnie Mathews featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard recorded for the Prestige label in 1963. But even though the material isn't soul-jazz, Mathews' quintet is certainly soulful. Hubbard, who was only 25 when Doin' the Thang was recorded, brings a lot to the session - not only fire, guts, and passion, but also a big, highly appealing tone. Doin' the Thang sounds like the title of a soul-jazz release also, one of the tracks is titled Let's Get Down. And when jazz improvisers used that much African-American slang in the '60s, it often meant that they were going after the soul-jazzorgan combo market which was relatively lucrative at a time when commercially, jazz had lost a lot of ground to rock and R&B. But this 1963 session isn't soul-jazz - certainly not in the. Ronnie Mathew's version of 1239-A Davis from his album Doin' the Thang. Personnel: Ronnie Mathews piano, Freddie Hubbard trumpet, Charles Davis baritone saxophone, Eddie Khan bass, and Albert Tootie. Ronnie Mathews is barely known today, but the pianist was a distinguished sideman starting in 1960 and a leader through the years. As a sideman, he appeared on Freddie Hubbard's Breaking Point 1964, Lee Morgan's Rumproller 1965 Max Roach's Drums. This album is not to be confused with Horace Silver's Doin' the Thing, recorded live at the Village Gate in 1961 for Blue Note. One of the tracks on Mathews' Prestige album is called The Thang, obviously leading a less than imaginative producer to piggyback on the Silver title. It's paired with saxophonist Roland Alexander's Pleasure Bent with Mathews on piano. Protection Each record is protected within its record sleeve by a white vellum anti-dust sleeve.
