Don't forget that the album sold for a rock-bottom price when it was new. The performance, of course, is magnificent. Far better sound, however, can be heard on CD issues. Decent audio restoration is available from Music & Arts, Gebhardt, and possibly one or two of the other reissue labels. The French Furtwängler Society, I believe, has done an even better job of remastering the material, and Pristine Audio is generally considered the best of all. Everything depends on your budget. The works are based loosely on characters from the Norse sagas and the Nibelungenlied. Part of the reason for the delay was that several of the singers were signed to another label, and part of the reason was that EMI thought a monaural cycle couldn't compete with stereo cycles. Finally, in 1972, EMI released the Rome Ring - and found it sold nearly as well as the stereo competition.
