In 2002, the master archivists at Table of the Elements made a crowning achievement: the beautiful An Angel Moves Too Fast To See box set by legendary New York composer Rhys Chatham. Holding three discs of guitar-orchestra masterpieces and a thick book of notes inside a heavy silver-and-white package, An Angel was dauntingly monumental, more fit to sit under museum glass than rub up against dusty jewel cases. But it also felt a bit like a coffin. If 100 guitars could sound so great, shouldn't 400 sound even better In 2005, Chatham set out to test this theorem. Moving permanently from New York to Paris, Chatham began composing his masterpiece, a piece for one hundred electric guitars, electric bass and drums. The result, An Angel Moves Too Fast to See, is one of the most extraordinary works in the minimalist canon, one that demonstrates the majesty inherent in Chatham's amplified imagination. Now widely available for the first time, this lavish CD presents this sonic revolution in all its glory, and cements Chatham's reputation as a monolithic figure astride both rock and classical musics. number: TOE CD 802. I haven't listened to Rhys Chatham for very long but An Angel Moves Too Fast To See already feels like an undisputable high point. But from the looks of this page and the average star rating, I can see it is disputable. What this five movement piece lacks in variance it makes up with everything else that makes guitar music enjoyable. Along with Branca, Chatham has carved out a unique musical world for himself through the use of electric guitars stomping the campground yet barely leaving a footprint. I like Branca and Chatham both, is that gonna be a problem
