Info
The Genius of Ray Charles is a 1959 Ray Charles album, released in October by Atlantic Records, the seventh album since the debut Ray Charles in 1957. The album consists of swinging pop with big band arrangements. It comprises a first half of big band songs and a second half of string-backed ballads. The Genius of Ray Charles sold fewer than 500,000 copies and charted at number 17 on the Billboard 200. Let the Good Times Roll and Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin' were released as singles in 1959. Ray Charles is the first release on LP by American pianist, vocalist, and band leader Ray Charles. Originally released in 1957 on Atlantic Records, it was re-released as Hallelujah I Love Her So in 1962. Many of the tracks had been hit singles for Ray Charles in the preceding years, notably Mess Around in 1953, A Fool for You and I Got A Woman in 1955, Drown In My Own Tears and Hallelujah I Love Her So in 1956. All songs written by Ray Charles except as indicated. The remaining six numbers are ballads, with Charles backed by a string orchestra arranged by Ralph Burns including Come Rain or Come Shine and Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'. Charles' voice is heard throughout in peak form, giving soul to even the veteran standards. Album 1959 12 Songs. In the first half, big-band arrangements transform Deed I Do and Let the Good Times Roll from beat-up pickup trucks into shiny, new Cadillacs. In the second half, a string orchestra elevates ballads like Dont Let the Sun Catch You Crying and Am I Blue into luxurious expressions of loss and loneliness. Through it all, Rays voice channels the rough-hewn emotion that was often lacking in an era of candy-flavoured crooners. Ray Charles. Released October 1959. The Genius Of Ray Charles Tracklist. For the first half, Charles old friend Quincy Jones crafts hard-swinging big band arrangements that match Rays band made up of musicians from the Ellington and Basie camps. Ralph Burns arranges the jazz-meets-string-orchestra second half, which features Just for a Thrill and Come Rain or Come Shine. The album showcased Charles breakout from rhythm and blues and onto a broader musical stage
