Randy Burns' second album, 1968's Evening of the Magician, is an enormous improvement over his 1967 debut, Of Love and War. That album, while fine for what it was, included too many covers of songs by Burns' contemporaries in the Greenwich Village folk scene to show what the singersongwriter was capable of. This album, which features ten good-to-great Burns originals, is far superior and much more personal feeling. Burns' new backing trio, the Sky Dog Band, provides sympathetic and low-key backing on keyboards Matt Kastner, bass and flute Bruce Samuels, and percussion. With engineer Herb Abramson they recorded Burns' second album, Evening of the Magician, released in 1968. For his third and final ESP-Disk album, Song for an Uncertain Lady 1970, Burns retained the Sky Dog Band, but the music showed an increased country music influence. Burns then signed for Mercury Records, releasing the album Randy Burns and the Sky Dog Band in 1971. He then joined the Polydor label, releasing I'm a Lover, Not a Fool 1972 and Still On Our Feet 1973, again with little success, and was dropped by the label.
