Sound of Christmas is an album of Christmas music by Ramsey Lewis' Trio featuring tracks recorded in 1961 and released on the Argo label. Reissued on a 1982 LP, the set features the Ramsey Lewis Trio consisting of the leaderpianist, bassist Eldee Young, and drummer Red Holt on ten Christmas songs, five of which add a string section arranged by Riley Hampton. The renditions of such tunes as Winter Wonderland, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Sleigh Ride, and Lewis' Christmas Blues are fun and melodic, if not all that unique. Track Listing. The first side of the album featured just the trio, while the second side featured the trio plus a string section. The material consists of jazzy versions of well known Christmas songs, plus two very good originals Christmas Blues and The Sound of Christmas. It's a very enjoyable album that even jazz haters will like. Read more. Ramsey Lewis, drummer Isaac Redd Holt and bassist Eldee Young formed the Ramsey Lewis Trio. They started as primarily a jazz unit but after their hit, The In Crowd, in 1965 the single reached fifth place on the pop charts, and the album second place the trio concentrated more and more on pop material. Young and Holt left in 1966 to form the Young-Holt Trio and were replaced by Cleveland Eaton and Maurice White. White was replaced by Maurice Jennings in 1970.
