Deadwing Lyrics. About Deadwing. Based on a screenplay by Steven Wilson and Mike Bennion, which Wilson intends to have made into a film. It is essentially a surreal ghost story. Deadwing Q&A. Deadwing is the eighth studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, released in Japan on 24 March 2005, in Europe on 28 March, and in the US on April 26. It quickly became the band's best selling album, although it was later surpassed by Fear of a Blank Planet. The album is based on a screenplay written by Steven Wilson and Mike Bennion, and is a ghost story. Deadwing is the eighth studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, first released on March 28, 2005. It quickly became the band's best selling album to date though was later surpassed by Fear of a Blank Planet. The album is based on a screenplay written by Steven Wilson and Mike Bennion, and is essentially a ghost story. Porcupine Tree have always been pigeonholed with the modern prog movement, but the reality is that they're both a riff-addicted metal band and a troupe obsessed with rich harmonies and memorable refrains. Take the grinding guitar work of Shallow which dukes it out with frontman Steve Wilson's undeniably melodic chorus before easing into the delicate, beautifully crafted Lazarus. Porcupine Tree have certainly gone through an interesting stylistic evolution over the years, but what's always been fascinating is that each shift is more like an extension of their previous eras. Think about it: Their first era was almost entirely built on psychedelic rock, albums like Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun are primarily alternative rock but contain elements of psychedelic rock, and everything after that has been progressive metal with elements of alternative rock and psychedelic rock. While Porcupine Tree are on hiatus right now, it would be interesting to see what they come u. Deadwing 2005 finds Porcupine Tree in top form and is loaded with excellent playing and songwriting. Although a bit heavier and louder than some of their earlier albums, the music on this album is still killer Porcupine Tree through-and-through. Overall, this is one of the few newer groups that really grabs me. The album blends the influences of heavy groups like Opeth with melancholy, softer passages and has a gloom to it that I find very appealing - not sure why I like the gloom so much - it just seems to resonate more.
