The album was released on October 1, 1994 by the Nippon Columbia imprint Triad. It is their first studio album not to feature founding member Keitarō Takanami, who departed the band earlier in the year. Overdose is the first of several Pizzicato Five albums to be themed around a famous city, in this case New York. The album delves into soul music, containing several references to Stevie Wonder, most prominently the harmonica solo. In early 1994, the remaining members of the Pizzicato Five Yasuharu Konishi and Nomiya Maki played in America for the first time, and it shows in Overdose. The album is a tribute to New York City, soul music, and Stevie Wonder in particular. Wonder-esque instrumentation and harmonica pop up in Questions, Hippie Day, and especially On the Sunny Side of the Street, one of their best singles. Elsewhere, Konishi is lifting riffs from the not-exactly-New-Yorker-but-it'll-do Donovan Airplane, using a rapper for the first time Takagi Kan on &q. Keitaro K-Taro Takanami, one of the founding members of P5, left the band during the Overdose sessions, and the album had to be dramatically re-cut in anticipation of its release. The result is a mixed bag of some of the all-time P5 classics Happy Sad, Groupie, and a few head-scratchers, most notably the bizarre 11-minute remix of The NIght Is Still Young which seems to exist for the sole purpose of occupying space. Ultimately, though, fans will find in this album some of the most satisfying deep cuts of the band's career, most notably the anthemic.
