Phill Niblock born October 2, 1933 in Anderson, Indiana is an American composer, filmmaker, videographer, and director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation for avant-garde music based in New York with a parallel branch in Ghent, Belgium. 1 Early life and education. Niblock has also made a number of films and videos, including several in a series titled The Movement of People Working. Filmed in primarily rural environments in many countries China, Brazil, Portugal, Lesotho, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, the Arctic, Mexico, Hungary, the Adirondacks, Peru, the films look at everyday work, frequently agrarian or marine labor. This leading US minimalist composer and filmmaker, presented his music and films simultaneously in a special concert. The films, made between started making these films back in 1973, upon visiting Mexico and Peru. It was here that he set out on his observation of the impersonal machinations of work. These films concentrate specifically on the work of human hands, both in terms of crafts, like weaving, and on the more industrial scale of farming, as is focused on by the films shot in Hungary, made in 1985 the most recent work here.
