The Forest is a mostly instrumental album by David Byrne, released in 1991, inspired by the Epic of Gilgamesh and set during the later Industrial Revolution. Some of the music from this orchestral album was originally used in a Robert Wilson directed theatre piece with the same name. The Forest premiered at the Theater der Freien Volksbühne, West Berlin in 1988. Pal - The Forest After records from Sangue de Cristo and label founders Photonz, Lisbon's One Eyed Jacks imprint turns to another Portuguese producer, Pal , who makes a rather astonishingly assured debut. The Forest is engrossing from the get-go, with a tough, syncopated chug that sounds like Marcel Dettmann gone reggaeton. That alone would have made a perfectly serviceable drum tool, but Pal doesn't stop there. Over the top, he layers a great, shimmering arc of a synthesizer melody, with long, sustained notes ringing against softly stabbing chords. The title track on his debut The Forest got him and the label the attention of a number of artists, DJ's and music fans that had never heard of the label or Pal at that point, and eventually the record entered SPIN's 20 Best Electronic Records of 2012 list, becoming a very important release for One Eyed Jacks.
