Cydonia is the fifth studio album by English electronic music duo the Orb. It was released on 27 February 2001 in the United Kingdom by Island Records and in the United States by MCA Records. Members Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann, along with usual collaborators Andy Hughes, Nick Burton, and Simon Phillips, wrote and produced the album for a planned 1999 release. Featured on the album are Robert Fripp, John Roome, and Fil Le Gonidec, who had previously only worked with the Orb in live performances. Much of Cydonia the title is a reference to a region of Mars where astronauts reportedly found evidence of ancient civilization aligns to the slightly spacey, slightly noisy dub heard on Orblivion and 1995's Orbus Terrarum. THE ORB Cydonia Deleted original 2001 US issue 13-track CD album from the UK dance pioneers including the single 'Once More', complete with picture sleeve and still sealed from new. Though Cydonia is far from being a dull, sequencer-heavy Namlook ambient release, it regrettably sounds irrelevant in today's climate. No one will deny the importance of the band's first two albums, but by the time they released the frighteningly claustrophobic Orbus Terrarum, the glitch of Oval and the algorithm of Autechre had turned the electronic scene microscopically inward. The Orb now find themselves creating breakbeat tracks that can't fairly compare with the dangerous dark of Dave Tipper or Rennie Pilgrem.
