Info
Dazzle Ships is the fourth album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark OMD, released in 1983. The title and cover art designed by Peter Saville allude to a painting by Vorticist artist Edward Wadsworth based on dazzle camouflage, titled Dazzle-ships in Drydock at Liverpool. Dazzle Ships was the follow-up release to the band's hugely successful Architecture & Morality 1981. OMD, then at their peak of popularity, opted for a major departure in sound on the record, shunning any commercial obligation. Покупайте и продавайте винил и компакт-диски, формируйте. OMD's glistening run of top-flight singles and chart domination came to a temporary but dramatic halt with Dazzle Ships, the point where the band's pushing of boundaries reached their furthest limit. A conversation with musician Andy McCluskey from Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, about their 1983 Dazzle Ships album that serves as the inspiration Ships was OMD's fourth album overall and the follow-up to their massively successful Architecture and Morality album, The highly-experimental Dazzle Ships differed from their previous releases by exploring the use of digital sampling keyboards. Though not a commercial triumph when it was originally released, it is now considered one of their finest musical moments. Cover condition : VG Very Good Media condition : EX Excellent. Dazzle Ships is one of British pop's more notorious flops. It was the follow-up to a major hit album but cut OMD's audience by 90. It was a mix of new songs, reworked B-Sides, and found sound experiments, which promised to mix ABBA and Stockhausen. It was named after wartime camouflage boats. It was appallingly reviewed. In fact I don't think you could design a record more ripe for revisionism: It's got a strong backstory, it's as ambitious as it is catchy and it even has a gorgeous Peter Saville sleeve. Luckily, you don't need a contraria. OMDs fourth album, Dazzle Ships, was perhaps a little too aptly named. Its title derived from the geometrically-painted warship camouflage intended to confuse enemy submarines during the 20th Centurys two World Wars, but its contents just as quickly confounded the public. While the album briefly peaked at No. 5 in the UK Top 40, Dazzle Ships was panned by the press and deemed a commercial failure. Fast-forward almost four decades, however, and this brave and still futuristic-sounding opus is finally enjoying its season in the sun. OMD's concept album about Cold War-era technology and tension was a flop upon its original release in 1983. But seen through modern eyes, it's a brilliant precursor to OK Computer. In 1983, OMD were trying to figure out how to handle the sensation caused by the surprise smash success of 1981's Architecture & Morality. That album matched religious imagery and impossibly ethereal electronic sounds with the band's already-established knack for pop hooks. Anchored by superlative singles Souvenir and Maid of Orleans, Architecture & Morality would have been pretentious had it not delivered the goods so convincingly. Understandably, it was a hit everywhere but the US. Listen free to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark Dazzle Ships Radio Prague, Genetic Engineering and more. 12 tracks 34:44
