This was surprisingly a grower. At first I didn't like it too much, as it is a very sparse album, full of compositions that change very little, very subtlely, but then the production skills of Nu:Tone won me over, over time. Beliefs starts well, throwing you into a progressive drum n bass as few people know how to do, and Deep Old continues well, very sparsely. This one and Missing Link are a bit too similar: both tracks mostly dissapear into their bassline. I thought that was lazy composition at first, but with time I started to appreciate the kind flow of both tunes.

Natalie Williams sings over the I.G.Y. sample in "System", the song most criticized because of its lyrics ("you're in my system baby, you've really got me crazy"), but let's make an effort and enjoy the wonderful range of Natalie.

The best of the album comes in the next three tracks. "Take me back" features Commix adding just some spice to those minimal elements, "What's your leisure?" never relases the tension created by the vocals, and "Say hello wave goodbye" is simply beatiful when the choir starts singing "uuuh". The rest is just nice, tracks that should work very well in a dancefloor, except from "Jet Stream" which has all the flaws that Nu:Tone could have (too much sugar, too much "UUUH", then vocoders, and me begging this to stop) and makes you wish for the discrete melodies the rest of the album have.

After all, the problem with "Back of beyond" is that it looks like a collection of singles with little flow. And as a collection of singles without flow, the MP3 "Medical History" works much better. But it would be unfair to discard it as a weak album, as it is still better than recent Netsky, High Contrast or Camo&Krooked releases from Hospital Records.

Or maybe I'm just a fan of the guy.
