Bandleader Noro Morales began as the pianist in his family's band, playing prestigious clubs in his native Puerto Rico and as part of the state band for Juan Vincente Gomez of Venezuela. Morales and some of his brothers eventually moved to New York and helped popularize the rumba rhythms that entranced the city throughout the 1930s. He soon established a crack band of his own and, along with outfits led by Xavier Cugat, Machito, Perez Prado, and Tito Puente, forged a charged and sophisticated Latin-jazz mix from the early '40s up through the mambo craze of the early '50s.
