Last Night on Earth is the third studio album by the English indie folk band Noah and the Whale. It was released on 7 March 2011 on Mercury Records. It peaked to number 8 on the UK Albums Chart. The first single from the album was . and the song Wild Thing is available to download for free from their website. Following The First Days of Spring 2009, the band's original drummer, Doug Fink, left to complete his medical training. The group's new addition, Michael Petulla, was. Released two years later, Last Night on Earth finds the band recharged and redirected. He used to be somebody, now hes someone else and it feels like heaven, Fink sings on the opening track, a tribute to transformation that doubles as the albums mission statement. Although released during the golden days of Englands indie folk scene, Last Night on Earth reaches far beyond the genre, relying heavily on keyboards and leaving the acoustic riffage to Mumford & Sons. In fact, Noah and the Whale's sophomore album, The First Days of Spring, deliberately turned away from that sort of thing, opting instead for a glummer, stripped, and slowed-down acoustic sound. If both these albums relied on a certain hand-crafted feel to derive their small charms, new album Last Night on Earth projects flaws and all onto slicker, seemingly bigger-budget productions. The third album by these posh indie-folkers may be one huge conceptual prank. It may be completely sincere. Either way, it's completely appalling. Having ditched the lo-fi stylings of their previous two releases, the Twickenham band have thrown themselves headlong into the pseudo-soulful blandness of late Eighties soft rock like some horrific Frankenstein hybrid of Deacon Blue, John Cougar Mellencamp and Hothouse Flowers. Last Night On Earth' seems like a natural progression for the band. The first album was upbeat and spoke about being in love the second was about the devastation of the breakup and life wasn't going to be the same and now the third is saying 'hey, you know what life does go on and things are looking good. So for me I thought the subject matter was a perfect progression. Thanks to Charlie Fink - who is a genius songwriter. Brilliant Album from Noah and The Whale, cannot keep it off my CD Player. Musically and Lyrically they must be one of the best groups around and fully desrve the success they have had. Cant recommend this Album highly enough to all
