The Secret Life of. is the debut studio album by Australian pop rock band the Veronicas, released on 17 October 2005 on Sire Records. It reached number 2 in Australia and is certified 4x platinum. The album spent over a year in the ARIA Albums Chart, without leaving the top 40. The album also reached number 5 in New Zealand and number 3 in the Billboard Top. The New Bloods carry on the tradition of impassioned, woman-driven punk like the Slits and the Raincoats so convincingly that their debut album, The Secret Life, could be mistaken for a reissue of some long-lost classic, like Kill Rock Stars' Delta Five collection Singles & Sessions 1979-81. Not because the trio tries to carefully re-create the sound of bygone days, but because they live up to their name, pumping new blood and life into their music while nodding to what came before them. The Secret Life's cover is a collage constructed from old photos of various unnamed people. Although most of them are black women, it's telling that people of multiple races and genders are represented in the collage. Only two of the album's 11 songs employ gender-specific pronouns. However, the New Bloods cannot be accused of dodging race or gender issues in their music. It's shortsighted to think that the band's demographics obligate them to address these issues in the first place. Rather, they seem to emphasize commonality.
