Neu 75 is the third studio album by the krautrock band Neu. It was recorded and mixed at Conny Plank's studio between December 1974 and January 1975. It was released in 1975 by Brain Records, and officially reissued on CD on 29 May 2001 by Astralwerks in the US and by Grönland Records in the UK. This album saw Neu regroup after a few years' break, during which time Michael Rother had worked together with Cluster in the krautrock supergroup Harmonia. One thing that is noticeably different on 75 is the presence of synthesizers and the preference of them, it seems, over Rother's guitar. Neu '75 may have marked a personal reunion for Dinger and Rother, but there's little union to be heard. The record's lush ambience masks a primal tension at the heart, as if Neu were unsure to whom they would be leaving their legacy: new age or punk. You must reconstruct Neu '75 in its original incarnation as vinyl in order to fully appreciate the bruising finality with which Leb Wohl would have concluded the first side.
