Neil Young spent his 2006 hawking Living with War, an album as immediate as a news bulletin, so perhaps it made sense that after its promo push was done he would retreat into the past, planning to finally finish Archives, the long-promised box set of unreleased performances from his vaults. illuminate the 2007 album, which is merely a good Neil Young album. Perhaps a little more than good, actually. The great lost Chrome Dreams was the original home of Powderfinger and Like a Hurricane. Nothing nearly that major uplifts this slyly titled collection, including its selling point, the Wacky Lost Ordinary People, an eighteen-minute ramble through various meanings of the word people steeped in Youngs lifelong confusion about popularity and democracy. Young was right to close with The Way, a gloriously simplistic salvation song backed by a childrens chorus that deserves to become his Give Peace a Chance. But beyond that its miss-or-hit. Even Dirty Old Man never quite captures the wicked glee that made Welfare Mothers worth a rehash. Chrome Dreams II is Youngs playful 2007 nod to the 1977 album Chrome Dreams that he once planned to release, but being Neil decided against. Youngs mercurial moods ensure a serendipitous return. Ordinary People is a song thats been floating around as performance and bootleg for years and finally receives an 18-minute official release that features Youngs related-to-the-era lyrics Lee Iacocca is so 80s and his usual incendiary guitar jams. Way back in the mid-70s Neil Young planned to release an album by the name of Chrome Dreams. Then it vanished from the schedules, another victim to the whims of Young and his mercurial muse. Its this very adherence to going whichever way the wind blows in his mind that makes him such a fascinating and frustrating artist
