Louis Lane, Robert Shaw. Sunday Morning, tone poem in 8 parts for orchestra. Ned Rorem wrote his String Symphony in 1985. It is in five movements and more closely resembles a suite. The symphony begins with a Waltz that begins with some hesitation, as if the orchestra was trying to decide what to play. Then, the melody bursts loose with some interplay between the string sections in an energetic tempo unlike any waltz. Half way through the movement, the waltz melody makes its appearance, somewhat reminiscent of a melody Samuel Barber. The music returns to the swirling passage of the opening and stops.
