Nikos Skalkottas Greek: Nίκος Σκαλκώτας 21 March 1904 19 September 1949 was a Greek composer of 20th-century classical music. A member of the Second Viennese School, he drew his influences from both the classical repertoire and the Greek tradition. Skalkottas was born in Chalcis on the island of Euboea. He started violin lessons with his father and uncle Kostas Skalkottas at the age of five, three years after his family moved to Athens because Kostas had lost the post of town bandmaster in 1906. Greek Dances 36 for orchestra, Books 1-3, Op. 11: Series III. Like the 21 Hungarian Dances of Brahms and the 16 Slavonic Dances of Dvorák, the 36 Greek Dances of Nikos Skalkottas 1904-1949 are immediately accessible with their distinctive melodies and colorful orchestration. However, unlike the dances of the two earlier composers mentioned above, Skalkottas eschews traditional development and simple dance forms ex: A-B-A. He wrote symphonic works Greek Dances, the symphonic overture Return of Ulysses, the fairy drama Mayday Spell, the second symphonic suite, the ballet The Maiden and Death, the Classical Symphony for winds, a Sinfonietta and several concertos, chamber music works, as well as vocal works. Although he came to know Schönberg's dodecaphonic system, Skalkottas shaped his own dodecaphonic idioms. Nikos Skalkottas Greek: Νίκος Σκαλκώτας was born on March 8, 1904 in Halkis island of Eubea, Greece. His great- grandfather, Alexander Skalkottas, from Pyrgos island of Tinos was a renowned folk singer, violinist and composer his father, Alexander Skalkottas, was a flutist. A child prodigy himself as a violinist, Nikos pursued his studies first in his home town with his uncle Costas, later at the Athens Conservatory, graduating with the First Prize Gold Medal in 1920. In 1921, on a series of scholarships, he left for Berlin where he stayed until 1933, first taking violin mast read more.
