Of all the dance-punk revivalists, has been the most consistently interesting and challenging, not to mention the group most likely to fill the dancefloor on indie rock night. While their previous album, the political and righteous Louden Up Now, was good enough to vault them to the level of the bands that inspired them Gang of Four, the Pop Group, Liquid Liquid, Myth Takes firmly establishes them there. It's a different fire that burns here for , mostly setting aside political concerns for fiery da. These stumbles aside, Myth Takes is a thrilling success. Not too many bands even in heyday of the initial wave of dance-punk released records as full of energy, intelligence, and ferocious funk as this. Myth Takes, 02:23. All My Heroes Are Weirdos, 03:04. Elastic Skunk
The jangly Southern rock that kicks off MYTH TAKES suggests that !!! is taking a new path, and the thick chaos of "All My Heroes Are Weirdos" reinforces this. Well, at least until "Must Be The Moon" goes back to the dancefloor. "A New Name" is also more controlled, as is the angular funk of "Heart of Hearts." But the thick glam stomp of "Yadnus" stands out that much more. "Break In Case Of Anything" heads back into random jam territory, but "Infinifold" sets things back into place with long, e-bow guitar wails and a simpler piano line. Enjoying this album isn't a mistake at all.
